Title: The Cat, the Sneak and the Secret (Cats in Trouble Mystery 7)
Author: Leann Sweeney
Publication Date: 2015
Widower Jillian Hart is a quilter and a cat lover. In addition to her three impetuous and loving cats Chablis, Syrah, and Merlot (totally great names for cats, right!), she often fosters cats for others. Her fiance’s son Finn can’t keep his cat until the semester is over because of dorm restrictions, so Jillian agrees to add Magpie to her brood. Magpie is a bit of a kleptomaniac and a master of escape. When Magpie escapes and hides in an old couch, Jillian goes to retrieve him but is surprised to find more than just the cat. She also discovers human blood and a bullet. When a body is discovered buried in cement a few days later, Jillian wishes Magpie could talk about what she witnessed.
The daughter of the deceased finds comfort at Jillian’s home, drawing Jillian into the mystery. Then when a town favorite appears to have committed suicide, Jillian’s fiancé Tom must step out of his PI role and back into the police department. With Jillian and Tom’s wedding less than a week away, she fears that blood and death and a curious kitty will prevent her “happily ever after.”
This is a great cozy mystery series for anyone who likes cats. I have read all the books in the series; none of them make me think too hard but they are all light, enjoyable reads — perfect for sitting in carpool. The characters are fun, and being a cat-lover, the antics of the felines in the story are always entertaining.
One thing that I really enjoy about this series is that the cats don’t “solve” the mysteries. I have read other mystery series that have the cats help to solve the crime and I just find that a bit too unrealistic . . . especially as I am writing this, my two cats are sound asleep in the chair next to me! I like the antics of the cats but they are adornments to the story rather than being the primary focus.
Who might like this book:
If you like cats and mysteries and want a book to just enjoy and not think about too much, this is a great series for you. The author describes herself as a writer of “gentle” mysteries in towns you would like to live in, and I think that is a great description. Just a nice story.
You can read them out of order and still understand the plot lines, but I wouldn’t recommend it. You know me – always read the series in order!!
Here are the books in order:
The Cat, the Quilt and the Corpse
The Cat, the Professor and the Poison
The Cat, the Lady and the Liar
The Cat, the Wife and the Weapon
The Cat, the Mill and the Murder
The Cat, the Vagabond and the Victim
